The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin -- a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. A 1996 vintage cognac from Delamain, using first growth grapes from Mainxe. It was matured in their hallowed Vintage Cellar in Jarnac for before selection and bottling.
The family-run house of Delamain is one of the oldest Cognac producers, founded in 1762. The company is rare in that it produces no VS or VSOP Cognac, and also chooses to reduce bottle strengths down to 40% abv with 'faibles' (old, low-strength Cognacs) rather than with water.

The wine has a dark amber color with a lucid and consistent yellow edge. More than a Marsala, the impact of the aroma is like a great Viccotto from the Marche region, although it is much finer. The 1995 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Quinta do Poço do Lobo is unoaked and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This Reserva has more power than the regular reds and much riper fruit. It is bigger and fresher in every respect. Intense and powerful, this is nuanced by cassis and red fruits. It ends with a big finish. There are some typical nuances of aging Cab too. So, while it is fresh for its age, it hardly tastes like a young red. Many will consider that a good thing. …
